World of Layol: About

The Prophecy

There was a prophecy. Catherine Solaire ruled with grace for years, but on her wedding day the Old Crone bestowed her with a foreboding. Catherine was told her reign would bring darkness to Layol. Her people would turn on each other and all of Layol would be lost. There was nothing she could do to prevent it.

It was told her heir would have to pay for the sins of her family. She would be the only one able to dissipate the darkness. It drove the queen mad. That her unborn child’s fate had already been chosen to face this burden before she even took her first breath. It was years before Catherine produced an heir, but when she did, she kept her hidden from the world. In her paranoia, she thought it was protecting her.

History of Layol & Adeline

Layol was barren, slowly dying like all that resided on her. Legend also reveals of a young girl, Adeline. She heard the shadows consume the minds of loved ones around her by turning them mad with emotion. She felt the pain of Layol as if she was a part of her. One day, Adeline stumbled upon a lonely stream with a single tree. As if being drawn to it, she touched the bark of the tree becoming a conduit for Layol. Adeline wept for her. Without hesitation, Adeline wanted the suffering of the world to end, so she offered herself up as a sacrifice, asking if Layol would use the last bit of her power to send the shadows deep within her so Layol would thrive as well as the people who resided on her. Touched by the girl’s purity, Layol agreed. But, instead of leaving Adeline to die in the darkness, Layol bonded with her. Their souls intertwined in the process. When Adeline woke, a golden pendant of a sun rested upon her neck as a reminder of their agreement they were both willing to sacrifice themselves so all could live. When Adeline died, the symbol appeared on her daughter, and her daughter’s kin, and so on.
